Reach Africa Foundation in-cooperation with four International Organisations namely: Cord Aid the Hague, Wilde Ganzen Helverson, Ncdo Amsterdam Novib-Oxfam the Hague. In collaborated with a community based organization (CBO) in Imo State Nigeria, to support an agricultural project that aim at improving production and income of disadvantaged women in four communities

Project Phases:

The First Phase: This phase focused on the identification and mobilization of low-income women from four communities and adjoining areas, with the goal of organizing area-based self-help groups for the project’s start-up.

The Second Phase: This phase involved the construction of a fence and shade for the poultry farm, as well as the digging of boreholes to ensure a reliable water supply and water reserves for the farm’s operations.

The Third Phase: In the final phase, training and workshops were conducted to teach participants how to efficiently manage the project.

Achievement

This project has provided women in four communities with hope for self-sufficiency and capacity building. The women have received various levels of training on modern poultry farming, enabling them to own and manage their own poultry farms. They are directly benefiting from the production of these farms.

Ownership: The project and farm are owned and managed by the members of the OWOSHEG Self-Help Entrepreneur Group.

Results/outcome:

As of the last evaluation in 2017, approximately 210 members have benefited from this project. They have gained skills, knowledge, and technologies in modern poultry farming, leading to increased income and the creation of sustainable, area-based, group-owned self-help entrepreneurial activities. Additionally, the project has contributed to improved nutrition and health, as well as enhanced self-esteem and empowerment among low-income women.

Long-term expectations:

The goal is to create sustainable, group-based self-help poultry activities that produce high-quality chicken, thereby increasing the income of low-income women and significantly improving their livelihoods. Additionally, the project aims to assist these women in selling their poultry products, such as chicken and eggs, in local urban markets, where there is a high demand for these products.
